We are all waiting for Ghana’s biggest music night to see who would emerge as the winner in the various categories they’ve been nominated in and we just can’t wait anymore for this year’s VGMA awards happening on this Saturday, 14th April 2018. As we wait for the day to know who would emerge a winner, it’s prudent that we as a popular entertainment blog, share with you our thoughts on what we see happening at this year’s VGMA.
Stonebwoy did a good job last year, but we didn’t really feel his energy as compared to the last 3 years and we were expecting more of him especially when he had joined the biggest record label in the country earlier on in August. He dropped some good songs, and a beautiful album, but none of his song, were able to translate into a major hit in the country, but that did not deter him from earning some nominations at this year’s VGMAs.
Stonebwoy had 6 nominations in the 2018 VGMA. He was nominated in Reggae/Dancehall song of the year, Afro Pop Song Of the year, Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year, songwriter of the year, album of the year and artiste of the year.
1. Stonebwoy will NEVER win Artiste Of The Year: Yes, he won’t even if he assembles the 245 gods of Pluto. He didn’t do that much last year, and he had no major hit song, which even explains why none of his songs was able to make it into the song of the year category. The organisers of the scheme even decided to cut down the list from 8 to about 5 this year and if they had decided to keep it at 4, Stonebwoy would have been out. I believe he got that on merit and mainly because of his brand, moreso, there was no artiste that could have replaced him, that was why he even got that nomination. Let’s Not Argue he’s not going to win. We know it’s going to be either Shatta Wale or Ebony (I am tipping Shatta to win actually)
2.Reggae/Dancehall Song Of The Year: The chances of Stonebwoy taking this one are very very low. With this category, popularity is the keyword in there. Now, if the board and academy would be honest, I don’t see why they would vote ‘My Name’ as much more popular than ‘My Own’ by Samini or ‘Dem Confuse’ by Shatta Wale. It’s going to be tough for Stonebwoy and I know he won’t win this one as well because per the category definition, the songs that were really popular in that category are ‘Dem Confuse’ and Samini’s ‘My Own’ but I have that feeling Shatta Wale will win this one.
3.Afro Pop Song Of The Year: Okay so Stonebwoy is not mainly an Afro Pop artiste although he does Afro Pop sometimes and you don’t need to know anything about rocket science to know, it’s going to be really hard for him to grab this one as well. This category is not mainly about the popularity of the song, but how the song was able to have a mix of other music genres. This is very tough and I am tipping Adina to win this one with ‘Makoma’ either than that Kurl Songz’s ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ should win it.
4. Reggae Dancehall Artiste Of The Year: Stonebwoy had a nomination in there but who will win in this category is really going to be lucky. I feel it’s still between Ebony and Shatta Wale. If Shatta Wale wins this category, he will lose out on the artiste of the year and if Ebony wins this one, she would lose out on the artiste of the year. The board and academy could decide to be merciful and hand it over to Stonebwoy.
5.Songwriter Of the year: I would literally cut off my head and put it in my mouth if Stonebwoy is able to win this one. I see the board and academy voting more for Bullet to win in this category for ‘Maame Hw3’ because of the lyrical content and also the fact that lots of people applauded Ebony for this song as it was something on Domestic violence.
6. Album Of The Year: Well, this is the only category I think Stonebwoy has a bigger chance of winning if his fans vote well for him but Sarkodie is not also going to go home with more than 2 awards this year and his fans are not also going to let this slide at all. The ‘Highest’ album has an equal chance of winning, but I would pray Stonebwoy’s album wins this one, else it’s going to be a ZERO night for the ‘Hero’ singer.
